While I really enjoy composing game remakes (that people actually listen to!) I find it very important not to forget that I also compose original music by myself. Since my personal album is still some time away from its release (real life gets in the way once again!) I am going to share another one of the songs that had been residing on my computer's hard drive for some time now.
Reality Into Illusions (23/05/2010)

The style is a mix of electronic and rock music and a bit different from past songs I have posted here. Like so many other of my projects it's probably not 100% finished and I might improve upon it over time and replace the current version with a better one .. but for now, I hope you like what you hear!
I wish I had some artwork to go along with these tunes, I'm sure they would get twice the attention! :P

A few months ago I came across a game project called Last-Out, a remake of the classic Amiga shoot-em up Z-Out for the PC, created by Christophe Simon. Having fond memories of the Amiga game (must've played it a million times back in the day) I was very impressed by his work. The remake looks and feels just like the original but provides updated, higher resolution graphics and the parallax scrolling is especially awesome.
One thing Chris' project lacked however was a composer, so I decided to contact him and offered to write an original score that is based on the music by Chris Huelsbeck (Title Theme) and Rudolf Stember (Ingame Music). It is my first contribution to a game project out there (about time!) and so far it's been great fun!!
The latest demo of Last-Out (0.5.1) is now available, with 4 of the 6 levels fully playable and a freshly baked, brand new score! See the following video for some hot ingame footage:
We are working hard to bring you Level 5 in a future demo release and the final game should follow soon thereafter. The fully remastered soundtrack will also be available as separate MP3 album download.
Please forward all game related bugs, suggestions and feedback to Chris, or myself if it's about the music :)

Yay!! My game music remakes turn out to be quite popular and so I decided to do another one. This time I proudly present my take on the title theme song from the famous Amiga game "Unreal". The original was written by Charles Deenen and is a true masterpiece that remarkably withstands the flow of time. It is also a very difficult song to reconstruct, as it uses a mix of special sounds and effects that do not necessarily resemble a standard set of instruments. I spent a long time just searching for the correct sets in my soundfont collection to get the overall feel of the original song right. The whole project took me 30 hours, or 3 nights in a row .. I'm very happy with the result and I'm sure you'll enjoy it too!! Would be so cool to hear Charles D's own opinion about this, I might just go ahead and send him an email! :) Check out his website if you want to see a very cool home studio!!
The MP3 download sounds considerably better due to Youtube's audio codec being awfully bad!

There's something about classic platform games that makes them irresistible even today, and the music contributed a big deal to the gaming experience! Rodland is one of those games, and I've begun work on remaking the entire game soundtrack.
Like it? This song is part of the Rodland Remastered Album, so far 4 of the 6 tracks are available, download them here:
Rodland Remastered (01 of 06) - Title Theme
Rodland Remastered (02 of 06) - World 1
Rodland Remastered (03 of 06) - World 2
Rodland Remastered (06 of 06) - Ending Credits
More songs are in the works, so stay tuned!

Granted, this video is not actually taking place at midnight as the title of my newest song suggests, but it's a great match nonetheless - a perfect tune for driving down the road provided you got a driver's license which I don't, so it's just videogame driving for me but that means "No petrol, no taxes, no running costs!" And you get to drive and trash some really cool cars too. Here we have a classic, recognize it? ;)

When I sat down at my 'puter last night to fiddle with a new idea for a song I had I did not realize I'd still be working on it 12 hours later. For some reason I just felt very creative and I composed the whole thing in nearly one go. This song is called "Undiscovered Paths" and it reflects a bit my current situation of being on the look for a new job again. The song title is a reminder to me for what lies ahead - somewhere out there is a place where my skills and experience are needed, and somehow I will find it so I can carry on with my life and pursue my career goals.
As always, enjoy the song and if you like it, please share your thoughts! :)

Free 4.0 and 5.1 channel surround sound music still remains a rare find on the internet. A very good online place for original and creative surround work is the homepage of Bjørn Lynne, a musician who's been composing since the old Amiga days. 5.1 mixing is considerably more difficult and time-consuming than working with regular stereo files and finding the right environment for mastering your tracks is anything but easy. Yet if you do manage to set up your very own 5.1 mixing studio then working with surround sound can be tremendous fun! I only just started experimenting more with this myself and I'm proud to present you my very first complete 4-channel surround track "Against The Wind", which is the same song I posted as a regular stereo .mp3 on the front page a while ago. "Why only 4 channels?" you might ask. Well, this is because I do not require a subwoofer (LFE) and center speaker in my studio setup, all low frequency sounds go across the large front speakers instead. So it's actually just 4 channels but it still belongs in the surround sound category, maybe I will add a center and LFE channel later on in the future. If you use a setup with subwoofer then I suggest you enable "bass redirection" in your favorite .ac3 audio player while playing the file.
In order to play .ac3 files you need a player that can play this format, like Winamp with free .ac3 plugin (download it from their website) There's other players such as VLC and PowerDVD who can also open .ac3 files and play them over 5.1 surround systems.
As always, hope you enjoy my work and feel free to share it! :)
